Employment Evidence for VETASSESS: Building a Strong Package
By The Migration First Team
VETASSESS spends significant time reviewing employment evidence, and small inconsistencies here are the most common reason for partial or negative outcomes. Building a strong evidence package isn't about volume — it's about making the story clear, consistent and independently verifiable.
The four pillars of VETASSESS employment evidence
1. Employer reference letters on letterhead, with role, dates, hours and specific duties.
2. Payslips covering as much of the period as possible — a monthly sample is ideal.
3. Contracts / offer letters for each role.
4. Tax records — annual returns, tax certificates, or equivalent country-specific documents.
Each piece corroborates the others. Where one is missing, the others need to fill the gap — or the assessor may consider the employment period unproven.
Highly relevant vs closely related — the classification
VETASSESS classifies employment as highly relevant (duties tightly match your nominated ANZSCO code) or closely related (same industry but different substance).
Only highly relevant employment counts fully toward the required minimum. Reference letters that describe generic industry roles risk being classified as closely related — which can push you below the required minimum experience.
Overlapping employment
Two full-time roles claimed at the same time trigger scrutiny. If you legitimately held two roles concurrently, be prepared to explain how the total hours added up (part-time + part-time, or evening consulting alongside a day role) and support with independent evidence.
How Migration First helps
Migration First coordinates VETASSESS documentation with a specific focus on maximising the classification of your employment as highly relevant — which usually means restructuring reference letters to emphasise the specific ANZSCO-aligned duties.
