The EA Summary Statement: Mapping Your Career Episodes to Competencies

By The Migration First Team

Share

The Summary Statement is the connective tissue of a CDR — the document that shows Engineers Australia exactly how your Career Episodes evidence each competency element for your chosen occupational category. Weak Summary Statements are the reason many otherwise-solid CDRs come back with partial or negative outcomes.

What the Summary Statement is

The Summary Statement is a tabular document. Down the left, every competency element EA publishes for your occupational category (Professional Engineer, Engineering Technologist or Engineering Officer). Down the right, references to specific paragraphs in your three Career Episodes that demonstrate that element.

You can only reference paragraphs that actually exist. If a competency element isn't demonstrated in any of your three Career Episodes, the Summary Statement forces you to revise the episodes.

The iterative approach

Most strong CDRs are written iteratively. Draft one Career Episode, sketch the Summary Statement for it, notice which competencies are thin, and add or restructure content in that episode or the next.

By the end of your third Career Episode, every competency element should have at least two supporting paragraph references — often more.

Common Summary Statement mistakes

1. Referencing paragraphs that don't clearly evidence the competency claimed.

2. Repeatedly citing the same paragraph for multiple competencies.

3. Leaving competencies with no reference at all.

4. Writing the Summary Statement in a hurry after the Career Episodes are done — often exposing gaps too late to fix cleanly.

How Migration First helps

Migration First coordinates CDR preparation iteratively — the Summary Statement is planned early and revisited after every Career Episode draft to ensure every competency element has strong supporting evidence.
