Choosing the Right ANZSCO Code for Your ACS Application

ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) is the shared occupational classification used by the Department of Home Affairs, assessing authorities and Australia's employment statisticians. Each occupation has a six-digit code, a formal name, a set of core duties and a skill-level rating.

For ACS applications, your ANZSCO nomination tells ACS which duties to expect in your reference letters and which ICT competencies to look for in your evidence.

Spend 30–60 minutes reading three or four candidate ANZSCO descriptions side by side. Focus on the substance of the duties, not the occupation name.

Ignore visa demand or invitation-round patterns when choosing — that's a regulated migration question. Choose the code that best fits what you actually do.

For each candidate ANZSCO code, list your day-to-day duties from the past 3–5 years. Highlight which of those duties appear in the ANZSCO description. Do the same for the alternative codes.

The right code is the one where at least 70–80% of your duties naturally map to the ANZSCO description — not the code with the highest projected demand or fastest processing.

Full-stack developer claimed as Software Engineer (261313) when duties are closer to Developer Programmer (261312).

DevOps engineer claimed as Systems Analyst when duties align more with Systems Administrator or ICT Support.

Data engineer claimed as Database Administrator when duties align more with Software Engineer or Analyst Programmer.
